Rally Today to Save Delta Queen Riverboat
Delta Queen
A crowd of history buffs will rally on the Ohio Riverfront today in an effort to save a piece of Tri-State history. Supporters of the "Delta Queen" hope their message echoes all the way to Capitol Hill. The "Save the Delta Queen" rally will be from noon to 1 on the Public Landing downtown.
The historic steamboat does not meet federal guidelines for operating as an overnight vessel because it is made of wood. The Delta Queen has been getting a Congressional exemption since 1966. But that exemption expires in November and is in danger of not being renewed.
Opponents to the exemption fear the wooden paddlewheeler could be a safety risk. Supporters say the Delta Queen is inspected by the Coast Guard once a year.. and has smoke detectors and a sprinkler system. A number of local politicians will be at the event, showing their support.
Nice day for it, hopefully they'll get some strong support for it down there.
